Cheap Printing Often Makes for Cheap Results

While you always want to spend the least amount possible, spending too little can make for disastrous results. In the case of custom printing, cheap printing too often makes for cheap results. Cheap is good, but when does cheap become bas?

In printing, you can usually tell who spends more than another when comparing two sets of marketing materials, business cards, or even letterhead. Cheap printing rears its ugly head in the form of faded and grainy prints. Quality does often cost more, but it is always worth it.

Consult with a professional printing company before you make a mistake that could cost client confidence. Look for cheap printing, but demand pristine results.

VistaPrint Tip: How to Make Business Holiday Cards Personal

Sending business holiday cards can boost your presence and business relationship with clients and customers. But rather than just sending a generic card, how do you make business cards personal? There are a few ways you can make sure your business holiday cards have that extra touch:

1. Make sure you write the address on each envelope by hand. If you’re doing this process in large volumes, consider hiring someone to help or enlisting the help of a staff member.
2. Sign each card with your signature and a brief note. Although pre-printed messages are acceptable, adding a short handwritten note can add immeasurably to the personal touch.
3. Take the time to find out what your client’s holiday practices are. For example, some clients may celebrate Hanukkah instead of Christmas. Creating a more generic message, such as “Happy Holidays”, may be more appropriate.

Digital Photo Printing

Digital photography involves the use of a digital camera; and it differs from traditional photography in that no film is used. Instead, images are taken by the digital camera and stored as a digital file on a memory card, which can be looked at as a kind of digital film. The advantages to digital photography over traditional photography are great; there is no film to buy, and since memory cards have the capability to store many more photos than film, and you don't have to wait until the photos are developed to see what they look like. You only need to print the photos you actually like, which also saves you money on this as well. Digital photo printing services are offered by many different on line retailers, and for those who prefer to go into a store to get their photos printed, large retailers such as Target, Walmart, CVS and Walgreens also offer services where you can bring your memory card and get photos printed from digital files. The typical cost of these in-store photo services is less than 29 cents a print, which makes the cost less than that of traditional film developing.

VistaPrint Tip: Everything You Need to Put on Business Cards

Doing your own business cards is not only possible, it can also be manageable if you know all the elements you need to put on them. Business cards have a number of key elements that you should be aware of. Here’s a list of everything you need to put on business cards.

• Logo – Most companies will have a logo signifying the identity of the organization.
• Name – This could be your name, the name of your business or both.
• Contact information – Depending on how you do business, you might include an address, web address, phone and email. Not every aspect is necessary, but give enough information for someone to contact you.
• Graphics – In addition to the logo, you may want to have additional graphics on the card. This can be as simple as the background color of the card or as intricate as a background pattern.

Brochure Printing Company

Once you've created your brochure, either from scratch or from a brochure template, you will need to find a brochure printing company to produce your brochure. When deciding on a company, you'll first need to make sure that the brochure printing company handles the type of brochure you need. Not all companies can print in full color, or on all paper sizes, so be sure to ask before contracting with a printer. Discount brochure printing can seem like a bargain, but you'll need to know about the quality of their work before using any company, so request a printed sample before using any unknown printer. A good brochure printing company will be happy to send you samples of their papers, print styles, coatings (such as glossy or matte) – as well as take the time to discuss your project with your thoroughly.

VistaPrint Tip: Moving Announcements

Just bought a house? Moving to another town? Or relocating temporarily? One way to let those you want to keep in contact with know is by sending out moving announcements. Moving announcements can be more efficient than calling by phone as well as reasonable for your pocketbook. By printing your own moving announcements and sending them out, you can personalize it as well. Here are a few ideas for printing your own moving announcements:

1. Use a printing template and just input your own information.
2. Snap a photo of your new home and use it as a background on the card.
3. Incorporate landmarks from the city you’re moving to in the design of the announcement.
4. Upload a photo of your family to print with the moving announcement.
5. Scan a drawing your child did of his/her new home and use that as the background for your moving announcement.

Homemade T-Shirt Screen Printing

It is possible to do your own t-shirt screen printing at home, especially if you'd like to pick up a new hobby. First, you'll need to obtain the supplies to make a silk screen, and the inks or dyes that you want to color your image with. Most of these items can be found at local craft or artist stores, or you can order them on-line from artist supply websites. You'll want to create a screen (there are many ways to do this, you can either make one by hand or print one from your computer, it's up to you and your pattern) – and then stretch and attach that screen onto a frame (making sure to account for the fact that silk screen materials often stretch). Once your silk screen is dry and ready to use, you'll want to apply the ink onto the screen (which you've placed onto the t-shirt) and squeegee it with a rubber blade onto the shirt. Take care not to use too much ink – the image may bleed. Remove the screen and allow the image to dry thoroughly before washing your shirt with the homemade t-shirt screen printing on it (make sure to read the ink manufacturer's directions for washing your new shirt).

VistaPrint Tip: Gift Ideas: 2008 Calendar

A 2008 calendar can make the perfect personalized gift for a number of events and occasions. You can order a 2008 calendar in a variety of design options, including a desk calendar, wall calendar and a magnet calendar.

For personalized 2008 calendar gifts, upload a photo and select a pre-designed graphic. Input a photo of a new addition to your family and give the calendars away as a baby announcement or upload photos from throughout the year and send them to faraway family and friends around the holidays.

You can also opt to go sans photo and just select an appropriate design theme, such as a beach backdrop, floral motif or one with natural landscapes. The calendars make ideal gifts for birthdays, gifts for grandparents, giveaways at baby showers, party favors, wedding favors and Christmas gifts.

Brochure Mailing

One final point to consider when getting brochure printing done is how you're going to distribute your brochure. Although some companies choose to leave their brochures in racks or hand deliver them to clients, most companies and businesses will be mailing their brochures. You could decide to mail brochures just in response to requests, or to do a direct mailing with your brochures. Another way to save is to get creative with your folds. If you have an 11”x17” sheet full of information, you may want to try trifolding it into a zig zag or typical brochure fold.

Designing a Brochure

Designing a brochure can be difficult, however, if you stick to designing your brochure for a specific purpose, you can make this task a bit easier. First of all, you'll want to decide why you're making your brochure and how you're going to distribute it. If you're planning on making a comprehensive brochure highlighting everything in your company, you might be better off using a larger format brochure (such as a folded 11”x17”) and using it to respond to inquiries about your company. Designing a brochure for direct mailing would go a bit differently. Since you want this brochure to be a general introduction to your company, you wouldn't make it as large or comprehensive. Instead, a trifolded 8.5”x11” sheet would be easier to mail as well as being shorter for potential clients to read.

Basics of Custom Printing Services

Anything custom is innately unique, right? Wrong. While custom printing services may produce unique results, the industry itself is anything but custom. If you are looking for custom printing services, there are some basics that you should know about what is typically included.

Many custom printing services include design assistance. If you have an idea but are having a hard time putting it to paper, many custom printing service providers have design departments dedicated to this type of assistance. Double-check before you choose your printer to see if they have this capability.

Typically, when it comes to custom printing services, pricing only includes the item printed on, unless otherwise specified. In the case of printing invitations or mailings, the pricing can often include envelopes or other inserts. You will want to be sure of this as well when determining your budget.

Lastly, all custom printing services will include a required approval, from you, before proceeding with a final run. Make sure that the company you go with will offer you a glimpse at your final product before you may have to pay for their mistake.

Business Card Templates

Business card templates can be an easy way to create a business card without having to hire a graphic designer or learn a design program. Many online business card printers offer templates that have pre-designed graphic backgrounds and fonts already chosen for you – all you need to do is to insert your own (or your business's) information. Other business card templates can be found on business card cd rom programs and collections, and some of these business card templates can be used on home inkjet printers to print your own business cards (using special perforated paper made to align with the templates and break apart into the correct 3.5”x2” cards). In this way, you can get business cards for use quickly, even though they may not look quite as polished as a professional business card would.

Choosing the Right Printing Facility

One other printing issue that can be as important as finding the cheapest printer is finding the right printing facility for your needs. For example, if you know that you're only going to be making a few color or black and white prints, you might not need a printing facility at all; an inkjet or laser printer in your home or office may be sufficient. If you are going to need many items printed, such as brochures, catalogs or other promotional items, you may need to find a printing facility that offers offset lithography (offset printing). This method of printing allows a company to produce many more items in a shorter period of time, by using different inks and “plates” to print the document. Finally, if you're in need of raised ink items, such as business stationery, you'll want to look for a printing facility specializing in thermography (thermal ink printing).

Calendar Printing

Calendars are a great idea for business promotion. People need and use calendars everyday – and are less likely to throw away this type of advertising. With the many types of calender printing available (in sizes ranging from small pocket size calendar to large wall calendars) there is a calendar that can fit any business budget. Many calendar printing services offer different types of calendars within the different styles as well – for example, you can get a wall calendar that has the entire year on one page, or you can choose to get a calendar with just a month on a page. No matter which type of calendar you choose for your business promotion, you'll know that you're putting your business name out there for an entire year, just by printing your name or logo on the calendar.

Items That Are Typically Screen Printed

There are many different things that can be screen printed. Usually, screen printing is done onto items that would generally not be able to run through a printing press. These include fabrics such as t-shirts, ceramics such as mugs and other dinnerware, and large canvases or other artist materials. Silk screening is especially popular these days on items such as coffee mugs, with many on-line stores offering the screen printing of photos onto mugs as gifts. These screened items are usually made up of many different colors, meaning that a variety of screens must be used to transfer different areas and blends of color onto the item. Other items that can be screen printed are other cloth items, such as tote bags, and even plastic items like pens – many of which are silk screened with logos and sayings so that they can be used as business giveaways.

Creating a Business Letterhead

When you need to have business letterhead printed, you'll often have an idea in mind of how you want it to look. You, or someone in your office, could create the layout of your business letterhead on the computer, or you could have a design or printing firm create it for you. If you choose to layout your own letterhead, be sure to include any graphics (such as logos) or fonts used in the layout when giving your digital file to your letterhead printer. Also be aware that some companies only accept digital files in certain formats; some of the most commonly accepted formats are PDF (portable document format), Quark Xpress, Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Publisher. Then you'll want to pick your paper (paper made with cotton is considered among the most professional) and ink (thermal, or raised ink, or flat ink are two options). Finally, be sure to ask for a “proof”, or a single copy of your letterhead, before you have your entire order of letterhead printed. It's important to make sure that your business letterhead looks exactly the way you want before your entire run is printed.

Online Printing Services

Businesses used to have to settle for local printers, no matter what their prices – today, Internet printing allows printers to offer many more services at cheaper prices. Many online printing services are also able to print from a variety of different digital file types – such as all of the Microsoft Office suite, Quark Xpress and the Adobe family of products. This can be much less time consuming than the old way of having to make sure that your digital file to be printed was in your commercial printer's preferred format, and dealing with such obstacles as color separation and registration.
