May 14, 2010, Newsletter Issue #219: Keep Your Check Information Up To Date

Tip of the Week

In our current state of heightened security against bank fraud and other concerns, having up to date checks is more vital than ever. Many businesses that still accept paper checks are much stricter about the information printed on those checks. Is your current address and last name on the checks you need to use? If the data printed on your checks doesn’t match your current state or military photo ID, you may have trouble getting your check accepted at local businesses. Fortunately, check printing is more affordable than ever and you can order cheap checks to replace your current inaccurate ones.
Check fraud is one of the main reasons why so many businesses are strict on the requirement for check data to match your ID card. It’s easy to forget to change your checks if your marital status changes, but the rule of thumb should be to reorder checks anytime there’s a change in your ID card or driver's license. Some people try to avoid frequent address changes by getting a P.O. box—if you are a student or your job requires frequent moves a P.O. box address could be a good solution, but check with your state licensing facility before ordering to make sure you know the rules for listing a P.O. box as your address on an ID. A better solution might be to list a parent or sibling’s address as your permanent location until you know frequent moves are a thing of the past.
